The Alpine Ski World Cup season opened in Sölden, Austria, on October 25, with Brazil's Lucas Pinheiro Braaten winning the men's giant slalom. On a course shortened by high winds, the Milano-Cortina Olympic champion led by 0.24 seconds after the first run and won by 0.48 seconds.

Switzerland's Loïc Meillard was second and five-time overall champion Marco Odermatt third, 0.49 seconds back. American River Radamus climbed from 15th after the first run to fourth, and Britain's Freddy Carrick-Smith rose from bib 46 to 12th.

Braaten said he had spent the summer looking for new ways to improve and aimed to set new goals for the season. Sölden is the traditional opening stop of the World Cup season.
