Three-Alarm Fire Guts Delaware Elementary School in Milford; No Injuries, Classes Canceled for a Week

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · Education · GSM News

A three-alarm fire tore through Lulu M. Ross Elementary School in Delaware's Milford School District in the early hours of October 25, heavily damaging the building. Superintendent Travis Moorman announced the same day that the school's students will have no classes from October 26 through October 30, with neither in-person nor remote instruction, while all other schools in the district operate on their regular schedule.

The fire was first called in around 4 a.m., and crews arrived to find fire through the roof. It took about three hours to bring the blaze under control. There were no reports of injuries. The cause remains under investigation, and Moorman asked the public to stay away from the school while cleanup and the investigation continue.

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, a former teacher, said on social media that a school is the heart of a community and pledged help from the state. U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride said she was glad no one was injured. Delaware Secretary of Education Cindy Marten said the state education department is working directly with Milford district leadership to meet immediate needs and support plans for students to continue learning. The district said it is working with the state to provide trauma support resources for affected staff and families.
