Sunday, October 25, 2026 · Education · GSM News

California's latest Smarter Balanced test results show students in Fresno County, in the central San Joaquin Valley, improving slowly. Across the county's more than 30 districts, over 48% of students met or exceeded state standards in English language arts and 36% met math standards, gains of 1.75 and 2 percentage points respectively.

At Fresno Unified, the state's third-largest district with about 67,000 students, nearly 40% reached English proficiency, exceeding the 38.3% recorded in 2019 and marking the district's highest rate under the testing system that began in 2015. Math proficiency stood at 29.5%, less than half a percentage point below pre-pandemic levels. Chief Academic Officer Carlos Castillo said scores are improving but the district still has a long way to go.

Nearby, Clovis Unified posted English proficiency near 69% and math at 55%, while Sanger Unified rose to 55% in English and nearly 44% in math. In western Fresno County, Golden Plains Unified improved its math proficiency by 6 percentage points in one year, with English holding at 26%; Superintendent Felipe Piedra credited parent involvement and rigorous teaching.
