Devin Booker's 43 Points Set Suns Home-Opener Record in 131-122 Win Over Warriors, Who Fall to 0-3 for First Time in 19 Years
The Phoenix Suns beat the Golden State Warriors 131-122 in an NBA regular-season game at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 24, winning their home opener behind five-time All-Star guard Devin Booker, who made 17 of 25 shots for 43 points with seven rebounds and seven assists, including 24 points in the second half. Booker set a franchise record for points in a home opener, surpassing the 37 scored by Charles Barkley against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 7, 1992, according to the Associated Press and Reuters. Phoenix improved to 1-1 before a sellout crowd of 17,071, bouncing back from a 41-point season-opening loss at Portland.
The game turned in the third quarter. After Golden State used a 12-0 run to lead 73-71, Booker scored 12 straight points, capped by a four-point play that made it 99-89 with 35.5 seconds left in the quarter, and Jordan Goodwin beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer for a 102-92 lead. Phoenix scored 45 points in the quarter, and Luke Kennard's 3-pointer pushed the margin to 117-102 with about six minutes remaining. Six Suns scored in double figures: Miles Bridges had 16 points, Dillon Brooks 15, and Kennard and Collin Gillespie 11 each.
Golden State, playing the second night of a back-to-back, was without Stephen Curry (right knee injury management), Brandin Podziemski (back), Draymond Green (low back soreness) and Al Horford (back). Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg led the Warriors with 26 points and nine rebounds, hitting six 3-pointers, De'Anthony Melton added 25 points — 20 in the second half — and Brandon Williams scored 20. The Warriors fell to 0-3, their first such start since opening 0-6 in 2007-08, a span of 19 years. Phoenix next visits the Oklahoma City Thunder on October 26, while Golden State plays at Denver the same day.
