Follow-Up: Thailand Flood Death Toll Rises to 83: Over 1.01 Million People Affected in Bangkok and 17 Provinces as Relief Reaches 1.17 Million Households

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · World · GSM News

Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) said on October 25 that flooding continued in Bangkok and 17 provinces, mostly on the Central Plains, with water levels falling in most affected areas. The Bangkok Post reported that the death toll from the flooding since mid-September had risen to 83.

The department's latest update counted 336,668 affected households, or 1,017,515 people, across 56 districts, 385 subdistricts and 2,756 villages. Director General Nirat Phongsitthaworn attributed the flooding to heavy rain combined with water flowing from northern Thailand into already swollen central waterways. Provincial authorities and Bangkok are continuing to certify applications before sending recipient information to Government Savings Bank, which transfers assistance to accounts with PromptPay registration linked to the recipient's national identification number.

Under a Cabinet resolution for the 2026 rainy-season floods, cumulative relief payments had reached 1,169,366 households across 54 provincial jurisdictions including Bangkok, totalling 8,953.286 million baht. A further batch scheduled for October 25 covered 2,006 households in Chonburi and Suphan Buri worth 15.142 million baht, with transfers beginning at 11 a.m. The day before, the department had submitted 26,334 households in seven provinces for payments worth 219.254 million baht.

Bangkok's application backlog remains the bottleneck. Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvech said roughly one million applications had been filed through the Tang Rath app, of which about 600,000 needed further document checks and 70,000 to 80,000 had initially been assessed as outside the criteria. The capital's own claims website had received nearly 150,000 applications, more than 100,000 of which required home inspections, with about 500 technical officers available and each inspection taking roughly 30 minutes. Applications through Bangkok's website close on November 30, and the city targets completing all cases by December.

GSM previously reported on October 17 that a lawmaker warned relief funds were nearly exhausted with 1.7 million applicants awaiting approval, and on October 20 that Thailand's Cabinet approved a 10.5 billion baht relief package including debt moratoria, soft loans and tax relief. This report follows the same flood event.
