Conservatives Win British Columbia Election With 64 of 93 Seats, a First Victory Since 1928 Ending Nine Years of NDP Rule

Provisional results in Canada's British Columbia election were announced on October 25: the opposition Conservative Party won 64 of the provincial legislature's 93 seats, winning an election in the province for the first time since 1928 and ending nine years of government by the left-of-center New Democrats, who won 27 seats. According to Reuters, Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson will become the province's next premier.

"I believe in energy... We will cut red tape like it's never been cut before," Doerkson said in his victory speech. He promised to "supercharge" British Columbia and said the province will host a business summit in Vancouver next year. The Conservatives pledged to double natural gas production by 2032 and more than triple it by 2035, end emissions limits, replace the province's carbon tax framework, and reach out to energy providers that had left the province's liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector since 2018, including ExxonMobil, Chevron and Woodside.

The defeated New Democrats, led by Premier David Eby, had voiced opposition to new oil pipelines and supported a ban on tankers along the province's northern coast. Eby had called for a strong mandate to confront U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats. Polls showed voters were focused on cost-of-living issues, healthcare, and the ongoing trade war with the United States.

The results are provisional; final seat counts are subject to official confirmation by the province's election authority.
