Prescribed Burns Planned at Four California State Parks in San Luis Obispo County Starting Late October, May Run Through June 2026

SAN LUIS OBISPO, California — California State Parks announced it will carry out a series of prescribed burns, with assistance from CAL FIRE and other partner agencies, at four state parks in San Luis Obispo County starting in late October, and the operations may continue through June 2026.

The four parks are Hearst San Simeon, Estero Bluffs, Morro Bay and Montaña de Oro state parks. All burning depends on available fire resources, weather and air quality conditions, and burns will be rescheduled if weather or vegetation conditions are not conducive to burning and smoke dispersal.

Some park roads, facilities and trails near the burn areas may be closed; visitors should check each park's official page for the latest closure information. People traveling near the burn areas may see smoke between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on burn days. Although prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than a wildfire, the department urges anyone who smells smoke to limit outdoor activities, with special care for children, the elderly and people with respiratory and heart conditions, and to use extreme caution while driving near operations because of fire personnel and equipment in the area.

The burns are part of the department's prescribed fire program for vegetation management, hazardous fuel load reduction, wildlife habitat improvement and other ecological benefits, including grassland and coastal scrub burns and burns addressing diseased, dead and downed trees. The department coordinates the burns with the San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District to minimize smoke impacts. For information, the public may contact District Superintendent Dan Falat at (805) 927-2065.
