Xbox's First Chief Operating Officer Helen Chiang Leaves Microsoft After Just Over Three Months, Ending a 21-Year Tenure

Sunday, October 25, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

Helen Chiang, the first chief operating officer in Xbox's history, has left Microsoft just over three months after taking the job, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. In a memo on October 23, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma wrote: "Helen Chiang is leaving Microsoft today. I'm grateful for her years of service and wish her well."

Chiang was appointed as Xbox's first-ever chief operating officer in July, following a 21-year career at Microsoft that included leading Mojang and the Minecraft franchise. Sharma said Chiang's immediate responsibilities will be divided among other Xbox leaders until a permanent leadership plan for the role is finalized.

When the role was created, Sharma said it was the first time Xbox was establishing a chief operating officer with end-to-end profit-and-loss responsibility across content, hardware, platform and services, reporting directly to her. Microsoft did not explain the reason for Chiang's departure. Xbox vice president of communications Kari Perez told The Verge: "We don't discuss individual personnel matters. We're grateful for Helen's years of service and wish her well."
