Australia: First International Flight Arrives at Western Sydney International Airport as Air New Zealand Auckland Route Launches on October 26

On the morning of October 26, an Air New Zealand aircraft flew from Auckland to Australia's Western Sydney International Airport and then operated the return flight, becoming the first international passenger flight received by the new airport. The airport, named after Nancy-Bird Walton, Australia's first female commercial pilot, had welcomed its first domestic passenger flight the previous day, and the international inaugural flight on October 26 marks its official debut as Sydney's second international airport. Under the schedule, Air New Zealand will operate the Auckland to Western Sydney route every Monday, Wednesday and Friday using Airbus A320 or A321 aircraft, departing Auckland at 6:00 a.m., arriving in Western Sydney at 7:45 a.m., with the return flight departing at 8:55 a.m. and arriving in Auckland at 2:10 p.m. Western Sydney International Airport is located in Sydney's fast-growing western suburbs, serving a population of about 2.5 million, and complements Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, which sits east of the city center and operates under a nighttime curfew; the new airport operates 24 hours a day with no curfew. The airport said that under long-term plans, annual passenger volume could reach 10 million by the 2030s, with related jobs supporting about 8,500 positions. For travelers living in Sydney's west, this route eliminates the trip across the city to the main airport and offers a closer option for trans-Tasman family visits, tourism and business travel.
