Singapore: Government Launches Three Nuclear Talent Programs on October 26, with Civil Servants to Train at International Institutions from Next Year

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

Singapore's Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Energy Market Authority jointly announced on October 26 the launch of three talent development programs to cultivate local nuclear energy professionals, enhance Singapore's ability to assess whether advanced nuclear technologies are suitable for local power generation, and prepare for a comprehensive nuclear infrastructure assessment to be carried out next year. The 'Singapore Nuclear Talent Development Programme' will promote cooperation between government agencies and leading global nuclear institutions, arranging for civil servants involved in energy development to receive on-the-job training at nuclear technology companies, engineering, procurement and construction companies and related institutions, to understand the actual operations of the nuclear energy field; the program will start next year and be rolled out progressively over the coming years. The 'Industry Nuclear Workforce Development Programme' will provide funding support to some Singapore companies, allowing employees to take part in international training and industry attachments. Another program, the 'Singapore Future Energy Experts Programme', will invite international energy-sector leaders to provide independent advice on Singapore's long-term energy strategy, covering energy policy and low-carbon technologies such as nuclear energy. The first batch of appointed nuclear experts will be finalized this year, and experts in other key areas of energy planning may be included in the future, including other low-carbon energy pathways, as well as grid infrastructure and planning. The National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University plan to jointly launch a master's program in nuclear engineering in 2027. Tan See Leng, Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry, said that even if Singapore ultimately does not adopt nuclear energy, it will continue to strengthen relevant professional capabilities. Singapore has not yet made a decision on developing nuclear energy; the focus of the talent programs is to first build assessment capability so that well-founded judgments can be made in the future when needed.
