New Zealand: Otago Strong Wind Watch Covers Midday to 9:00 p.m. on October 26, Inland Winds May Approach Gale Force

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

New Zealand's MetService issued a strong wind watch on October 24, warning that northwesterly winds in parts of Otago on October 26 may approach gale force, especially in exposed inland areas. The watch period is from 12:00 noon to 9:00 p.m. on October 26. MetService said the strong winds may blow down trees, damage power lines and unsecured structures, and affect driving, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles. MetService assessed the probability of this watch being upgraded to a warning as high, with the next update expected to be issued at 9:00 p.m. on October 24. MetService advised residents to secure in advance any items that could be blown away by strong winds, and to take extra care when driving. During the same period, weather watches and warnings were also issued for many places in New Zealand's South Island: a heavy rain watch for the Grey and Buller districts of the West Coast, strong rainfall in the Canterbury high country with an orange warning issued, an orange heavy rain warning for the Otago lakes headwaters, and sustained heavy rain expected on October 26 in Queenstown-Lakes, Southland and Stewart Island, where MetService issued a watch. The combination of heavy rain on the South Island's west coast and southern mountains with strong winds in Otago means that travel and outdoor activities on the South Island on October 26 require extra caution: mountain roads may see water accumulation or rockfalls due to rainfall, while strong winds in exposed inland areas pose risks to high-sided vehicles. Local residents and visitors should follow MetService's latest warnings on the day, adjust their itineraries reasonably, and avoid going to high-risk areas such as mountains and lakes during severe weather.
