“Soy México” Dual Nationality Registration Closes October 26: 268 Families in Ensenada Have Already Benefited

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

October 26 is the last day of the “Soy México 2026” dual nationality registration campaign in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, handled by the First Office of the local civil registry; residents can enquire by phone or through the civil registry's social media accounts. So far, in Ensenada alone, 268 families have benefited from the simplified process. The campaign, jointly promoted by the federal government and state and municipal governments, is the closing stage of this year's rollout of birth registration services across several Baja California cities, aimed at helping children born in the United States obtain Mexican nationality conveniently. Officials stress that dual nationality is more than a piece of paperwork: it bears on children's access in Mexico to healthcare, public education, housing and lawful residence channels, and on their identity choices between the two countries in the future. Once the campaign window closes, families return to the standard process, which usually requires an apostille and a certified translation for the US birth certificate, taking longer and costing more. For families in border regions, time costs are especially sensitive: many families travel back and forth between the US and Mexico, and whether a child's identity documents are complete directly affects school enrolment and medical care. Civil registry officials reminded families wishing to apply to go as early as possible on the 26th to avoid missing the deadline because of queues. The organisers said similar simplified registration services have been rolled out in several cities this autumn, and whether they continue will depend on local demand and federal arrangements.
