Madrid Global Obesity Summit Opens October 26: Co-Hosted by the WHO and Spain's Ministry of Health

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

On October 26, the Madrid Global Obesity Summit officially opened; the summit is co-hosted by Spain's Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization, with UNICEF and the World Bank as co-organisers, and runs from October 26 to 29. The summit is a global stocktake moment under the WHO's Acceleration Plan to Stop Obesity framework, bringing together governments, representatives of people living with obesity, youth, civil society and implementing partners in Madrid to assess progress, share experience and agree equitable, evidence-based priorities for prevention, early intervention and people-centred care before 2030. The summit's goals include reviewing implementation progress in participating countries, distilling lessons and good practices, strengthening peer learning and technical cooperation among member states, clarifying the next phase's priorities, and adopting a “Global Call to Accelerated Action” at the high-level meeting on October 28, prompting countries and partners to renew and raise their political commitments for 2026 to 2030. Obesity has become a global public health challenge, affecting not only individual health but also placing a heavy burden on countries' health systems; the rising trend in childhood and adolescent obesity is especially worrying. Discussions during the summit will cover food environments, physical activity, access to health services and social equity, among other areas. For ordinary readers, the summit's significance lies in this: whether countries can turn the individual advice to “eat less and move more” into systemic policy changes such as food labelling, school meals and walkable urban environments will determine the health trajectory of the next generation.
