Michigan Early Voting Continues on October 26: Detroit's First-Day 2,305 Ballots Set a Record

Monday, October 26, 2026 · City · GSM News

Early in-person voting in Michigan continued on Monday, October 26; the statewide early voting period runs from October 24 to November 1, Election Day is November 3, and voting sites are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. According to FOX 2 Detroit, Michigan's early in-person voting system stems from a constitutional amendment passed in 2022 and has been in effect since the 2024 presidential primary; every community must provide at least nine consecutive days of early in-person voting before each election, at least eight hours a day. Compiling media data updated on October 25, Detroit cast a total of 2,305 ballots across its 8 sites on the first day of early voting, a first-day record for the city; more than 1 million absentee ballots have already been returned statewide, and absentee ballot applications are running about 17% higher than at the same point four years ago. Voters interviewed said rising prices for gasoline, food, and medical care were the main reasons they voted early. Election officials remind voters who still hold absentee ballots that it is best to return them in person or use a designated drop box and avoid mailing delays near the deadline, because ballots must reach the election office by 8 p.m. on Election Day and postmarks do not count. Detroit voters can look up their early voting site through the Michigan Voter Information Center on the Secretary of State's website, and should note that early voting sites are usually different from Election Day polling places.
