Zhang Family Band Performs Free in New York on October 25: Traditional Chinese Music and Shadow Puppetry Come to the Lower East Side

On October 25, the Zhang Family Band gave a free performance on New York's Lower East Side as part of "Ancient Paths, New Voices," the Chinese culture festival. Known for combining traditional Chinese music with shadow-puppet theater, the Zhang Family Band is one of the participating ensembles in Carnegie Hall's Chinese culture festival this year, and the Lower East Side session let audiences who could not get into Carnegie Hall enjoy the performance for free. The show combined the timbres of traditional Chinese instruments with the light-and-shadow storytelling of shadow puppetry, featuring both familiar folk tunes and dramatized sequences performed with shadow figures, making it well suited for families bringing children to experience traditional Chinese performing arts. According to the organizer, "Ancient Paths, New Voices" is Carnegie Hall's citywide Chinese culture festival, with performances spread across multiple community venues, aiming to take Chinese culture out of the concert hall and into the neighborhoods. Sunday's free performance also added a touch of Chinese color to the Lower East Side's weekend cultural calendar.
