Tea Ceremony Experience at Seattle Japanese Garden on October 25: Urasenke Hosts Three 'Introduction to Tea Ceremony' Sessions

On October 25, the Seattle Japanese Garden held a tea ceremony experience, "Introduction to Tea Ceremony," presented by Urasenke in three sessions at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., each about 40 minutes, with advance reservations required. Held in the Shoseian teahouse inside the garden, the event had participants sit on tatami and, in the atmosphere of a traditional roji garden, taste tea and learn about the tea ceremony's ideals of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. According to the organizer, the tea ceremony has a history of several hundred years in Japan, and Urasenke's Seattle chapter is a local tea group whose demonstrations at the Japanese Garden have been described as "the host and guests connecting heart to heart over a shared bowl of tea." Participants were asked to avoid jeans, bare feet, rings and perfume, and the garden also prepared seating outside the teahouse for guests unable to sit on the floor. The Seattle Japanese Garden, located on East Lake Washington Boulevard, is a popular Japanese-style garden in the city, and Sunday's three tea ceremony sessions offered residents a quiet afternoon encounter with East Asian tea culture.
