Chicago Reading Salon 'In Translation' on October 25: An Afternoon Conversation on Diaspora Writing and Multilingual Narrative

On October 25, Chicago held a reading salon called "In Translation" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Matilda restaurant, 535 North Wells Street. With translated fiction, diaspora writing and multilingual narrative as its themes, the salon was aimed at readers who resonate with the experience of "becoming another self in another language," discussing identity, inheritance, and those parts of ourselves that cannot be fully translated when explaining who we are to others. The organizer said the salon welcomed everyone interested in diaspora literature, was conducted as a small-group conversation in which participants could exchange reading experiences around the table, and that the organizers might also use event materials in future promotion. Chicago is one of the important U.S. cities for Chinese diaspora literature and multilingual writing, home to many Chinese American writers and translators; this salon on translation and diaspora gave local readers an afternoon occasion to discuss literature from both Chinese and English perspectives, echoing the cultural atmosphere of Chicago's diverse immigrant communities.
