Portland's Sellwood-Moreland 'Monster March' Goes Ahead Free on October 25: Costumed Children Rain or Shine

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Society · GSM News

At 3 p.m. on October 25, the "Monster March" in Portland's Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood stepped off for free, starting and ending at Llewellyn Elementary School in the Southeast, open to all ages, rain or shine. It is a Halloween costume parade belonging to children: kids take to the streets in costume while neighbors watch along the route, in a relaxed atmosphere that is all about participation, not pageantry. The same afternoon at 3 p.m., Roseway Park across the river also had a costume parade; with the two events facing each other across the river, families could pick just one and skip the rushing around. The organizers reminded families that the event goes ahead rain or shine — late-October rain is normal in Portland — and that with an umbrella and good walking shoes you can comfortably watch the whole thing. For Sellwood-Moreland residents, this free parade is a fixed program of the community's autumn: once a year, neighbors meet on the street, children show off their costumes in front of everyone, and the Halloween atmosphere moves from individual homes out onto the whole street.
