Four Detroit Churches Sing 'Marvelous Things' Concert Together on October 25: Black Church Music Tradition Recorded Live

Singers, musicians and choirs from four Detroit churches gathered at 4 p.m. on October 25 at St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, 8850 Woodward Avenue, to perform the "Marvelous Things" concert with a live recording; doors opened at 3:30 p.m. The four participating churches were St. Matthew's and St. Joseph's Episcopal Church, St. Augustine and St. Monica Catholic Church, New Bethel Baptist Church and Hope United Methodist Church, and the program was rooted in Detroit's Black church music tradition. Serving as artistic director was Detroit-born bassist Marion Hayden, co-founder of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Straight Ahead, who received the Kresge Eminent Artist Award in 2025. The concert was supported by funding from the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, and the live recording will leave a lasting record of this musical tradition. The organizer said it was a shared concert and live-recording event, and the public was welcome to come hear the four churches' joint choral and instrumental performance. For Detroit listeners, the performance was both a Sunday-afternoon musical gathering and a concentrated showcase of the city's church-music history.
