Salt Lake City's First Presbyterian Church Holds 40th Scottish Festival; Bagpipes and Kirkin' o' the Tartan Celebrate Tradition

Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah — First Presbyterian Church of Salt Lake City recently held its 40th annual Scottish Festival, featuring bagpipe performances, Highland dancing, Scottish food and the blessing of family tartans, including the traditional Kirkin' o' the Tartan service. Founded in 1871, First Presbyterian Church is the oldest Protestant church still in existence in Utah, and the Scottish Festival, first held in 1986, has become an annual tradition of the church. The organizers said this year's festival was larger in scale than in previous years, celebrating Scottish cultural traditions while also serving the local community, with proceeds supporting programs that help people experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake City. Performances by Highland dancers and pipe bands, along with tartan displays and tastings, drew many residents; the church said the festival brings residents of different backgrounds together through music and food, and lets the traditions of Scottish-American families be passed down through the generations.
