UNM Health hit by cybersecurity incident; all clinics closed Oct. 26 and ambulances diverted to other hospitals

Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico — The University of New Mexico health system announced on Oct. 26 that because of a cybersecurity incident, it canceled all clinic appointments that day and diverted ambulances to other hospitals. In its notice, the health system asked patients not to come to any UNM Health facility that day; those with emergency needs should call 911, and non-emergency patients should postpone care and await further notice. The notice did not explain the cause of the incident, whether patient information was affected, or when ambulance service and clinic appointments would resume. The health system did not publish a list of affected clinics or explain how appointments would be rescheduled; patients should watch for follow-up notices before deciding whether to go in. The health system said staff are actively addressing the issue; the notice was issued on the afternoon of Oct. 26, patients should not go to any UNM Health facility that day, and developments will be updated in subsequent notices.
