Connecticut joins FTC in suing Dollar General, alleging shelf prices long differed from amounts charged

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

Hartford, Hartford County, Connecticut — Connecticut Attorney General William Tong announced on Oct. 26 that the state has joined the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general from 19 other states in suing Dollar General, accusing the discount retailer of long charging customers at the register more than the shelf, tag and advertised prices. The complaint alleges that for years Dollar General repeatedly mispriced items and overcharged consumers, and despite fully knowing of the problem internally, failed to correct it, reaping millions of dollars in improper charges from consumers.

Tong said in a statement that Dollar General knew it was overcharging consumers and did nothing, profiting from years of deception while American families lost millions of dollars, and that consumers should be able to trust the price on the shelf without worrying about what the register will charge. Connecticut Consumer Protection Commissioner Bryan Cafferelli said charging one price over the long term while posting another is not a simple mistake but a deliberate practice of taking advantage of consumers, and one that leaves front-line retail employees facing needless conflict. The complaint says thousands of Dollar General stores exploited inadequate safeguards to overcharge vulnerable shoppers by millions of dollars unlawfully; specific damages and corrective measures will be decided in court.
