Detroit District Weighs $8.7 Million Plan to Restore Libraries at 89 Schools: Board Vote Expected in November or December

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Education · GSM News

In Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti has proposed spending $8.7 million in one-time funding to bring libraries back to 89 schools; the school board is expected to vote on the plan at its November or December meeting.

The money would cover up to 4,000 books per school, furniture, displays, initial staffing and a new cataloging system; staffing the libraries would cost about $5 million a year after setup. The district has about $258.5 million in one-time funding available, and if the plan is approved the libraries could partially open by fall 2027.

Years of budget constraints and declining enrollment forced the closure of many Detroit school libraries, leaving spaces dormant or repurposed, and parents and teachers have long called for their return. Board chair LaTrice McClendon called bringing school libraries back a historic moment for the district.
