Illinois Man Charged Over White-Powder Threat Letters to at Least Four Congressional Offices: Detention Hearing October 28 in Springfield

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Justice · GSM News

In Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, federal prosecutors on Monday, October 26 charged Quincy resident Matthew Unglesbee in federal court with mailing threatening communications and conveying false information and hoaxes, after at least four letters containing a white powder were sent to congressional offices in the Chicago area.

The complaint says the letters, postmarked October 19 in Springfield, contained messages including "HA HA" and "HAH enjoy the gift." The FBI received an anonymous tip on October 16, recovered three letters on October 21 and a fourth on October 23, and arrested Unglesbee at his Quincy home on Sunday, October 25, where agents found a fifth, unsent letter. The powder tested harmless; Unglesbee said it was table salt.

The case was brought by the office of U.S. Attorney Gregory M. Gilmore. A detention hearing is set for Wednesday, October 28 in Springfield. The complaint does not name the recipients; Chicago-area media reported the offices included those of Reps. Quigley, Schneider and Schakowsky and Sen. Duckworth.
