Whirlpool Posts $249 Million Third-Quarter Net Loss: Sales Fall 8.8% to $3.677 Billion, Full-Year Outlook Cut to a $1.30 Per-Share Loss as Shares Drop Nearly 9% After Hours

Whirlpool Corporation, the U.S. appliance maker, on October 26 reported results for the third quarter of 2026: net sales of $3.677 billion, down 8.8% from a year earlier, and a net loss available to common shareholders of $249 million, compared with net earnings of $73 million a year ago. On a GAAP basis the loss was $3.80 per diluted share; on an ongoing basis the loss was $0.21 per share, against earnings of $2.09 a year earlier. Both sales and earnings missed analyst expectations.
By market, major-appliance sales in North America, the company's largest market, fell 8.3% to $2.495 billion, with a segment margin of just 3.0% and operating profit down 44.7% year over year; the companywide ongoing EBIT margin slipped to 2.6% from 4.5%. Latin America sales rose 6.9% to $858 million, but profit there was squeezed by a $54 million charge tied to the bankruptcy reorganization of a major Latin American retail customer, including $46 million of expected credit losses.
Whirlpool cut its full-year outlook for the third time this year: it now expects 2026 net sales of about $14.5 billion, a GAAP loss of $4.95 per share and an ongoing loss of $1.30 per share, down from the ongoing earnings of $2.50 to $3.00 per share it projected in August; operating cash flow is expected at about $700 million and free cash flow at about $300 million. Citing soft industry demand in North America, the company announced fourth-quarter price increases of 7% for major appliances in North America and up to 10% in Latin America, while its small-appliance business posted strong sell-through and global share gains.
Whirlpool shares fell about 9% in after-hours trading after the release, having closed regular trading on Monday down about 5.9% at $26.45; the stock is down about 61% this year. Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool's brands include Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid. The company scheduled its earnings call for 8:00 a.m. Eastern on October 27.
