Four Major U.S. Brokerages Form Open Real Estate, a National Listing Data-Sharing Initiative

Monday, October 26, 2026 · Real Estate · GSM News

Four leading U.S. residential real estate firms announced on Oct. 26 the formation of Open Real Estate, a national initiative to create a shared infrastructure for property listing data. The founding members are AGNT, Inc. (parent of eXp Realty and NextHome), HomeServices of America, Inc., Keller Williams Realty, LLC, and Real REMAX Group.

Under the proposed platform, participating brokerages and agents would enter property listings once, with distribution to multiple listing services (MLSs), real estate portals and other authorized recipients. The platform is designed to work alongside MLSs rather than replace them. Any brokerage may join as a free participating member, and firms can sign a letter of support at openrealestate.com.

In an open letter titled "Housing Markets Must Remain Open To All," the founding members wrote: "We believe that access, information and transparency should be a benefit, not a barrier to anyone looking to purchase a home. Buyers deserve fair and comprehensive access to available housing information. It's equally important that sellers have an honest understanding of how their homes are being marketed, who they are reaching, and the opportunities they may gain or sacrifice when deciding how best to market their home for sale."

The initiative is built around four founding principles: expand buyer opportunity, empower informed seller decisions, protect data integrity — with all members having full visibility to all homes for sale and when they are sold — and promote fair competition. The founders said that while shared listing systems have kept the U.S. housing market open for decades, more homes are now being marketed privately, fragmenting listing information; when information is fragmented or restricted, buyers risk missing available homes and sellers may reach fewer buyers, extending selling time and potentially affecting value.
