California State Parks Opens Applications for $188.5 Million in Park Grants: Up to $8.5 Million Per Project, Deadline Dec. 17

Sacramento, California — California State Parks announced that applications are now open for Round 5 of the Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program (SPP), with approximately $188.5 million available statewide and up to $8.5 million requestable per project. Applications are due before midnight on Dec. 17, 2026.
Funded by Proposition 4, the 2024 Climate Bond, the competitive grant program supports creating new parks and renovating or expanding existing parks in critically underserved, climate-vulnerable communities. Eligible applicants include cities, counties, districts, Joint Powers Authorities and nonprofit organizations, which must first submit an online application to State Parks. The department will host virtual and in-person workshops across the state to help applicants prepare.
"Having access to outdoor spaces is critical for all Californians, and this Climate Bond investment will contribute to improving the quality of life for many people who seek local parks to improve their physical, mental and social well-being," said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero. "We are proud to continue investing in projects that expand access to outdoor recreation and help ensure more people can enjoy the many benefits of nearby parks."
The program supports the Newsom Administration's Outdoors for All Initiative. SPP is the largest park-related grant program in California history, with more than $1.2 billion awarded through the 2018 Proposition 68 and 2006 Proposition 84 bond acts and state General Funds; under the Newsom Administration it has invested $802 million in 174 park projects, and with Round 5 it is expected to surpass $1.3 billion in total park investments. Since 1964, nearly 8,000 community parks statewide have been created or improved with funding from the Office of Grants and Local Services (OGALS), which has administered about $4.4 billion in grants since 2000.
