Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa — A 54-year-old Chicago, Illinois, man was sentenced on October 26 in Cedar Rapids to 259 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa announced. Demetrius Stone received the term after a May 8, 2026, guilty plea to one count of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. He must also serve a five-year term of supervised release after the prison term, and there is no parole in the federal system.

Evidence at the sentencing hearing showed that on January 7, 2026, officers tried to stop a car Stone was driving in Cedar Rapids. Stone sped away through a residential area at over twice the posted 25-mile-per-hour speed limit, ran a stop sign and nearly struck a city bus, then hit a curb, damaging his car, and attempted to run on foot before officers apprehended him a short distance away. Officers found over 11 pounds of ice methamphetamine inside and near the car. Later that same evening, officers searched Stone's Cedar Rapids apartment and found approximately five and a half pounds of ice methamphetamine, approximately eight ounces of cocaine, a loaded gun, and approximately $59,000 in cash — bringing the total amount of ice methamphetamine seized to more than 16 pounds.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams imposed the sentence. Stone is being held in the custody of the United States Marshals until he can be transported to a federal prison. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Adam J. Vander Stoep and investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force, consisting of the DEA, the Linn County Sheriff's Office, the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Marion Police Department, and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement. The case file number is 26-CR-5.
