Boston Man Alexis Lara Herrera Sentenced to 8 Months for Smuggling Firearms to the Dominican Republic Hidden in an Air Conditioner

Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts — Alexis Lara Herrera, 28, of Boston, was sentenced on October 26 to eight months in prison, to be followed by two years of supervised release, for illegally sending firearms between the United States and the Dominican Republic, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. Herrera, who is subject to deportation, pleaded guilty in May 2026 to failure to file export information.
On or about March 18, 2023, law enforcement at the Port of Haina in the Dominican Republic searched a shipping container from Brooklyn, New York, whose manifest listed household goods, and found four Glock firearms and 500 rounds of ammunition hidden inside an air conditioner. The container had originated in Boston, and the four seized Glocks had come from federally licensed firearms dealers.
A search of Herrera's phone showed he communicated with multiple co-conspirators about the shipment and engaged in firearms smuggling, including texts and a photo of multiple guns; other evidence showed he discussed numerous further shipments to the Dominican Republic, including one in June 2023, after this shipment was seized. U.S. Senior District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV imposed the sentence. U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley, HSI Acting Special Agent in Charge Jeff Grimming and ATF Boston Special Agent in Charge Thomas Greco announced the case; the Boston Police Department assisted, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke Goldworm prosecuted.
