FDA Warns Against Feeding Two Lots of Darwin's Cat Food After Salmonella Positives; One Cat Hospitalized, Firm Has Not Adequately Recalled

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned on October 26 that pet owners should not feed two lots of Darwin's Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Chicken Recipe for Cats after samples tested positive for Salmonella.

The FDA said it collected and tested samples after receiving a consumer complaint: two cats developed gastrointestinal illness after eating the product, one was hospitalized after eating food from one of the affected lots, and both recovered after they stopped eating the products. The affected food is sold frozen in 2-pound packages divided into four separate units, in white and clear plastic packages with green and black labeling, with no expiration date on the label, through an online subscription service, and could still be in consumers' freezers.

The affected lots are Lot 12731 (manufactured July 8, 2026) and Lot 12493 (manufactured April 2, 2026); lot codes are printed on the front of the lower left unit of the package. The FDA recommended that Arrow Reliance, Inc., doing business as Darwin's Natural Pet Products, recall the two lots, but to date the firm has not initiated an adequate recall.

The FDA advises owners to stop feeding the listed lots, throw the food away in a secure container, and not donate it; to clean and disinfect pet supplies, bowls, utensils, food preparation surfaces, bedding, toys, floors, refrigerators or freezers and any other surfaces the food or pet may have contacted; and to wash hands thoroughly. Salmonella can affect both people and animals: people may develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, and severe cases may require hospitalization; pets may show vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite or decreased activity, and owners should consult a veterinarian promptly if symptoms appear. Neither freezing nor refrigeration kills Salmonella.
