Five Green Card Holders Arrested in Florida, Charged with Illegally Voting in 2022 and 2024 Elections

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement on October 26 that Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), arrested five non-citizens in Florida on October 21 and 22, all of them lawful permanent residents, charged with voting by an alien in past elections. The arrests were announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida.
The five are: Diane Wendy Curley of Canada, arrested October 21 and charged with voting in 2022 and 2024; her record includes convictions for resisting an officer without violence and battery on a law enforcement officer, and arrests for domestic-violence battery and violating a domestic-violence injunction; she became an LPR in 1994. Luis Manuel Perez of Cuba, arrested October 21 and charged with voting in 2022 and 2024; he entered the United States illegally in 1981, became an LPR in 1985, and has a prior arrest for battery. Jaimie Orlando Sosa Sardina of Cuba, arrested October 22 and charged with registering in 2022 and voting in 2022 and 2024; an LPR since 1968, he has convictions for two counts of aggravated battery on a police officer, resisting with violence and disturbing the peace, and arrests for a felony RICO violation and two counts of cocaine trafficking. Pedro Igor Almeida Franco of Brazil, arrested October 21 and charged with voting in 2024; an LPR since 2005. Lise Marie Johnson of Canada, arrested October 22 and charged with registering in 2021 and voting in 2022; an LPR since 2015.
"Every time a non-citizen votes, it steals the vote of a hard-working American citizen," DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said in the statement, adding that the Trump Administration is committed to restoring election integrity and making sure only American citizens elect America's leaders.
DHS said the arrests are part of a broader administration effort against non-citizen voting: in September and October, HSI and the FBI indicted ten non-citizens in Minnesota and arrested ten in North Carolina, with similar cases in New Jersey, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Kansas. In June, DHS directed ICE to enforce stricter penalties for non-citizens who vote illegally, including deportation. The five Florida cases will proceed in federal court.
