Port of Long Beach Showcases Fifth Graders' Artwork: First Port Art Program Gallery Open Through November 11

LONG BEACH, Los Angeles County, California — Drawings and paintings created by local fifth graders in the Port of Long Beach's first Port Art Program are on display through Wednesday, November 11, at the gallery in the Port Administration Building at the Long Beach Civic Center, the port announced on October 26. The gallery is free and open to the public.

The port, in partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach, hosted two weeklong sessions in July in which students took a harbor tour to learn about the port's operations and history, were taught artistic skills, and created original artwork with the port as inspiration. The students' creations were celebrated on Saturday at the gallery's official opening.

"Through the artwork of their children, families gain a new connection to the important role the Port plays in our city," said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Steven Neal. "At the same time, the Port is enriched by the creativity of its youngest community members." Port CEO Noel Hacegaba said the program encourages students to explore their creativity while introducing them to jobs in trade, as part of the port's broader education initiatives aimed at building the next-generation workforce.

The gallery, in the lobby of the Port Administration Building at 415 W. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach, is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through November 11.
