The Hawai'i Department of Health announced on October 26 in Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawai'i, that Peter Tuiolosega Silva is the recipient of the 2026 Suzanne Richmond-Crum Award, honoring his outstanding contributions to HIV services in Hawai'i. According to the Department of Health's Harm Reduction Services Branch, Silva has worked in HIV services for 30 years, on both O'ahu and Hawai'i Island. He is currently chief executive officer of Kumukahi Health + Wellness, formerly the Hawai'i Island HIV/AIDS Foundation; under his leadership the agency expanded medical care services, including opening a sexual health clinic, and expanded syringe exchange and overdose prevention services. The department said Silva has long served people living with HIV on Hawai'i Island, as well as LGBTQIA+ communities, indigenous people, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and other marginalized communities, working to reduce stigma and promote inclusive programs and culturally grounded approaches to services. The award is named for Suzanne Richmond-Crum, who served for more than a decade as director of the department's Hawai'i Seropositivity and Medical Management Program and died in 2004. The award will be presented on December 1, World AIDS Day, at the Church of the Crossroads in Honolulu.
