Canada Announces Over $813 Million for Research: More Than 450 Researchers Supported, $120 Million to Five Transformation Teams

HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada — The Government of Canada announced on October 23 an investment of more than $813 million to support world-class research. Karim Bardeesy, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, announced the funding on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry, saying it will support over 450 researchers across Canada, cutting-edge research infrastructure, and help institutions with the indirect costs of research, while strengthening research security and helping attract and retain leading talent.
The funding flows through several channels: $120 million from the 2026 New Frontiers in Research Fund Transformation competition to five research teams addressing major challenges; more than $369 million in 2026-27 Research Support Fund (RSF) grants to help 161 institutions cover a portion of the indirect costs of research; nearly $104 million in RSF Incremental Project Grants to 34 institutions; and nearly $25 million in RSF Research Security grants to 51 institutions.
The government said that as global research and innovation evolve at an unprecedented pace, investing in a strong Canadian research ecosystem is critical, and that Canadian researchers are advancing transformative discoveries that improve lives, strengthen communities and support a more prosperous and competitive economy.
The Research Support Fund is a recurring federal program that helps universities and research institutions defray indirect costs such as facilities, utilities and compliance. The scale of this round — over 450 researchers and 161 institutions — will shape laboratory capacity and graduate and postdoctoral positions across Canada in the coming years.
