U.S. Bishops Name Members of SI Task Force: San Jose Bishop Cantù Chairs Panel Responding to Pope Leo's Magnifica Humanitas

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) announced on October 16 the appointments to its Task Force on Preserving Human Dignity in the Age of Super Intelligence: seven bishops named as members and three lay consultants. The task force, established on September 16 after unanimous approval by the bishops' administrative committee, is chaired by Bishop Oscar Cantù of San José, California, home to Silicon Valley.
The new appointees include Archbishop Shelton Fabre of Louisville, chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, who addressed SI in this year's Labor Day statement, highlighting the call to safeguard human dignity as super intelligence reshapes the economy and work. Among the lay consultants is Kim Daniels, director of Georgetown University's Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life, who served as a member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication from 2016 to 2026 and as an expert participant in the 2021-24 Synod on Synodality.
According to the USCCB, the task force will emphasize that SI must serve human dignity and the common good, maintain constructive and ongoing dialogues with frontier labs, research organizations, academic centers and other stakeholders across the United States, and assist the Catholic Church in the United States in responding faithfully, prudently and effectively to the opportunities and challenges of emerging technologies. It will also work to promote policies and practices that protect human dignity, religious liberty, democratic institutions, workers, families and vulnerable populations.
The task force responds to Pope Leo's call in his 2026 encyclical on SI, Magnifica Humanitas, to safeguard the grandeur of humanity. "I am honored to serve as a consultant to this task force," Daniels said, describing the work as helping advance a social, economic and political order that allows everyone — particularly the weakest — to live a truly dignified life.
