Amy Winehouse Musical in Development for London's West End, Variety Reports: Casting Under Way

A stage musical based on the music of Amy Winehouse is officially in development for London's West End, first reported by Variety and confirmed by The Guardian. Broadway producer Catherine Schreiber, whose credits include "Cabaret" and "Rent," is involved, casting is under way, and Mitch Winehouse, the singer's father, who oversees her estate, is believed to be participating, though his role has not been confirmed.
The form of the piece has not been settled: it may be a biographical musical, or an original story built around her catalogue. No writer, theatre or opening date has been announced. Workshop listings on actors' casting profiles suggest the development has been picking up speed, with an award-winning director attached to the early stages; whether that director will stage the final production is unclear. It is not the first attempt to bring Winehouse's music to the stage: in 2012, the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen planned a show using her songs, but it was cancelled after her father declined to approve the use of her music and likeness.
News of the musical comes as London marks 20 years since the release of "Back to Black." At the Roundhouse in Camden, original album producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi joined Winehouse's original band and singers including Jorja Smith, FLO, Corinne Bailey Rae and Jessie Reyez for an anniversary concert. In 2017, Mitch Winehouse told The Sun he hoped to see a musical happen: "We want to do something that remembers Amy for what she was; there's so much more to her than just the drugs and the alcohol." Winehouse died in 2011 at the age of 27 of alcohol poisoning. In her career she won six Grammy Awards, a Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist and three Ivor Novello Awards.
