Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow Wins Re-election with 54.2%, Defeating Brad Bradford

Monday, October 26, 2026 · World · GSM News

Toronto's mayoral election concluded on October 26, with incumbent mayor Olivia Chow winning re-election to her first full four-year term. Chow took 532,201 votes, or 54.16 percent, defeating her main challenger Brad Bradford, who received 404,013 votes, or 41.11 percent.

Unofficial results released by the City of Toronto show 982,660 ballots cast and turnout of 45.84 percent, giving Chow a margin of 13.05 percentage points. CBC News projected Chow the winner on election night as results came in. The mayoral vote was held alongside Ontario's municipal elections, in which voters also chose city councillors and school board trustees.

The race tightened late: Bradford campaigned on a property tax freeze, more police hiring and a line-by-line audit of city finances, focusing on affordability and public safety, and briefly led in some polls. After former federal immigration minister Chris Alexander withdrew on October 6, the contest became a two-person race. The final poll, by Liaison Strategies on October 24-25, had Chow ahead 52 to 44, close to the final result.

Chow was born in Hong Kong in 1957 and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1970, settling in Toronto. She served as a Toronto city councillor from 1992 to 2006 and as a member of Parliament from 2006 to 2014. In 2023, after mayor John Tory resigned, she won the ensuing by-election to become Toronto's first Chinese-Canadian mayor. Toronto is home to one of Canada's largest Chinese communities; her new term runs to 2030.
