Follow-up: Saudi, Pakistani and Turkish Officials Meet Iran in Tehran on October 26 and Agree to Continue Talks

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey held talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday, October 26, in a bid to ease military escalation in the Middle East, Reuters reported. The talks were the first high-level contact between Iran and the three nations, which signed a mutual defence pact in August. The four countries agreed to continue talks with a view to strengthening cooperation in peace and security, Iranian state media reported, while Saudi Arabia said the visit sought to establish open negotiating channels to 'prevent the return of military escalation' and to de-escalate tensions and enhance regional security.

The visitors were Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, who also met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian; Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, led the Iranian delegation. Rezaei called the talks 'very good' and said regional security 'should be achieved by the countries themselves' and that foreign intervention must be prevented. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said regional security can only be ensured by relying on the will and security considerations of the region's countries, and that the talks also addressed Israel's policies, developments in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon, and the repercussions of US and Israeli military action against Iran. GSM reported the delegations' arrival and the opening of the talks on October 26; the agreement to continue consultations is the latest step.

The Mecca defence pact signed in August treats an armed attack on one member as an attack on all three. Pakistan has separately worked with Qatar to mediate between Washington and Tehran; an interim agreement brokered in June was intended to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and open broader settlement talks, but quickly unravelled as attacks resumed. Tensions remained high the next day: the Saudi-led coalition said on Tuesday it had intercepted and destroyed three ballistic missiles launched toward Saudi Arabia's Eastern Region and four drones directed at its Southern Region, fired by the Iran-aligned Houthis.
