Follow-up: UK Charges Two Men Over RAF Fairford Incident, One Accused of Assisting a Foreign Intelligence Service Police Link to Iran

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · World · GSM News

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced on October 27 that two 24-year-old men have been charged under the National Security Act 2023 following an incident involving RAF Fairford, with a first hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court in London later the same day. The CPS stressed that proceedings are active, that both men have the right to a fair trial, and that they stand charged, not convicted.

According to the CPS, Mohmed Abdulkarim, of the London borough of Westminster, is charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service: prosecutors allege that between August 31 and September 28, 2026, he engaged in conduct likely to materially assist a foreign intelligence service in carrying out UK-related activities, contrary to section 3(2) of the Act. Nouman Essghir, also of Westminster, is charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK: prosecutors allege that on August 22, 2026, he inspected, approached or was in the vicinity of a prohibited place, contrary to section 4(1).

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing, said police believed the country Abdulkarim was assisting was Iran. RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire in southwest England, had been used by US bombers to carry out strikes on Iran; the bombers were withdrawn on security grounds shortly after five British men were arrested outside the base in the early hours of September 27. Five other men arrested during the investigation remain on police bail. Frank Ferguson, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, said prosecutors decided to bring the charges after a Counter Terrorism Policing investigation into the high-profile incident, and would keep working closely with partners as the complex investigation continues.

GSM previously reported the case on October 21, when counter-terrorism police re-arrested two men, bringing arrests in the case to seven. The filing of charges marks the case's move into court proceedings.
