University of New Hampshire Unveils $5.2 Million Expansion of Jackson Estuarine Laboratory on Great Bay at Ribbon-Cutting in Durham, Strafford County, New Hampshire

Durham, Strafford County, New Hampshire — On October 27, the University of New Hampshire held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the expansion of its Jackson Estuarine Laboratory on Great Bay, celebrating completion of the $5.2 million project. U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen joined university and state leaders at the ceremony. Shaheen said she was proud to help secure more than $3 million in federal funding to improve the laboratory's facilities. The expansion adds 4,500 square feet of facilities, including two high bays for working on vessels, buoys, and equipment for aquaculture and remote sensing; dive lockers with showers and space for storage and repair of diving equipment; and a 36-person meeting room with an adjacent office. An estuary is a partially enclosed coastal body of water lined with marshes and sea grass, and the laboratory's research aims to make New Hampshire's coastal economy healthier.
UNH President Elizabeth Chilton said marine science and sustainability are longstanding strengths at the university, that the expansion represents an important investment in that work, and that it creates new opportunities for students to work alongside experienced scientists and gain hands-on experience addressing real-world challenges. The laboratory said the upgraded facilities will support research on building resiliency in estuarine and coastal systems.
