Seattle's Wing Luke Museum Opens Eng Family Home Tours October 29: $30 Ticket Includes Museum Admission, Retelling a Chinese Immigrant Family's Story

In Seattle, King County, Washington, the Wing Luke Museum announced that guided tours of the Eng Family Home will open to the public starting October 29, with tickets priced at $30 including museum admission. The house is a surviving witness to the life of a Chinese immigrant family in Seattle.

The home was built by immigrant Suen King Eng. The Eng family ran Eng's Grocery, the Golden Star Cafe, and King's Chinese Laundry in Seattle's Chinatown; family member Min Hing contributed income through knitting, and Sue Fong ran a bean-sprout business in the basement to help make ends meet. During the Great Depression, the family lived frugally and still sent remittances to relatives in Guangdong.

The Wing Luke Museum purchased the home in 2021 for $1.8 million and has preserved and restored it. Family descendant Sue May Eng said she hopes visitors will see not just a house, but the real life of an immigrant family putting down roots, earning a living, and supporting one another in America.
