Canton, Mississippi Charter School's Contract Revoked on October 26 in State First; Over 120 Students to Transition by Year-End

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Education · GSM News

Canton, Madison County, Mississippi — SR1 College Preparatory and STEM Academy in Canton has become the first Mississippi charter school to have its charter contract revoked. The Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board voted unanimously on October 26 to terminate the school's contract, finding it had not met the academic and financial performance expectations in its contract or generally accepted standards of fiscal management. The board said in a statement that the decision rests on the financial performance and internal control evidence in the hearing record, including the school's annual financial audits. The school currently enrolls more than 120 students; under the board's arrangements it will continue holding classes through December 31 while the board oversees the closure process to ensure an orderly transition. The school and its attorneys had not responded to requests for comment as of reporting. Mississippi currently has 10 public charter schools, funded by local, state and federal taxes; each operates under a contract with the Authorizer Board setting specific academic and financial goals, and the board evaluates the schools annually.
