Trump Confirms on October 26 He Is Considering Moving the White House Press Briefing Room, Denies Plan to Rebuild the Pool

President Donald Trump confirmed on October 26 that he is considering relocating the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room in the West Wing of the White House, and explicitly denied any plan to rebuild a swimming pool on the site. According to LaPresse, Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post: "Also, I am not building a swimming pool in the White House Press Briefing Room, and I never intended to do so." He added: "I am thinking about moving the Press Briefing Room to another location, but I will use that space for the urgent needs of journalists."

The dispute followed a New York Times report that Trump had told aides he wanted to restore the indoor pool installed in 1933 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The pool was covered over under President Richard Nixon and converted into press workspace and a lounge that doubles as a briefing room. The current room, named for President Reagan's press secretary James Brady, seats 49 reporters; the former pool beneath it now houses computer servers.

Trump had already called the reports "Fake News" in a Saturday post, while hinting he "might move the Fake News to a less objectionable location." In his October 26 post he repeated: "The old swimming pool will never be rebuilt. It NEVER even crossed my mind to do something so stupid." The White House has not announced where or when the briefing room would move.

According to LaPresse, the administration has repeatedly sought to restrict press access at the White House and the Pentagon, most recently removing Andrew Feinberg of The Independent as a White House-accredited journalist after he confronted the president in the Oval Office.
