Sam Altman Unveils OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra for Computer Use, Priced at $1 per Million Input Tokens

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Technology · GSM News

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman on October 26 announced the launch of GPT-6.1 Terra on X, writing: "6.1 Terra is here! It is good at a lot of things, but we are especially excited for this new era of computer use." OpenAI then formally released the model, positioning it as the lower-cost tier of the GPT-6 family built for computer-use tasks: the model can interact directly with computer screens to fill out forms, process invoices, edit videos and interpret technical drawings. Benzinga reported the launch on October 27.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Terra completes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. The company's internal testing showed an error rate of 16.7% on difficult prompts at low reasoning effort, down from 53.6% for GPT-5.6 Terra; OpenAI noted the results come from its own evaluations and have not been independently verified. The company said the model is also better at staying within task boundaries, identifying obstacles and resisting prompt-injection attempts, while for the most complex coding tasks GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice.

For developers, GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens through the API, half the listed rates for GPT-6.1 Sol, with higher pricing applying to requests exceeding 272,000 input tokens. The model is now available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu subscribers through ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI recommends that developers test Terra on their existing workloads before migrating applications.
