The Flaming Lips Announce 17th Album The Teardrop Throbs: Out January 22, 2027 via Third Man Records, Lead Single Premieres

Third Man Records has announced that The Teardrop Throbs, the 17th studio album by American band The Flaming Lips, will arrive on Friday, January 22, 2027. It is the three-time Grammy Award-winning band's label debut for Third Man and its first all-new LP in more than six years, following 2020's American Head. The album will be available digitally, on CD, and on vinyl in black and a limited-edition Teardrop Blue pressing, with pre-orders and pre-saves open now. Its first single, God Will Control The Werewolves, premiered on the day of the announcement and is streaming everywhere.
The 13-track album was produced by The Flaming Lips with Taylor Johnson, Dave Fridmann and Scott Booker, with additional production by Jon Fridmann and Mike Fridmann. In extensive notes accompanying the announcement, frontman Wayne Coyne traced much of the record's inspiration to fatherhood: sitting in a Trader Joe's parking lot watching his 3-year-old son Rex sleep in the back seat, he misread a Children's Health Foundation sign as Children's Death Foundation, setting off reflections on mortality and loss. The lead single, by contrast, grew out of a game of hide-and-seek with his sons Bloom and Rex under a full moon, when he reassured them that God would control the werewolves while they played. Coyne added that he does not believe any song has a fixed meaning, and does not want his songs to have one.
The tracklist opens with Throb and includes Titan, Every Teardrop Cried, Hooray, You See You in Me, You've Got Brain Damage and At the End of the Day, closing with the instrumental Now I Understand.
To introduce the album, the band will play a series of intimate two-night stands: Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl on January 22-23, 2027, followed by Irving Plaza in New York (January 26-27), The Bellwether in Los Angeles (February 23-24), Metro in Chicago (February 27-28) and London's O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire (April 2-3). The band's pre-sale begins Wednesday, October 28 at 10 a.m. local time, local pre-sales follow October 29, and the general on-sale begins Friday, October 30 at 10 a.m. local time. Additional dates will be announced, according to the label.
