CDC Deputy Director Jennifer Shuford to Leave Trump Administration After Next Week's Midterm Elections, Washington Post Reports

Jennifer Shuford, deputy director and chief medical officer of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will leave the Trump administration after next week's midterm elections, Reuters reported on October 27. The Washington Post first reported the departure on Monday, October 26, citing sources, and Reuters said it could not immediately verify the report.
According to CDC's official leadership biography, Shuford serves as the agency's deputy director and chief medical officer, providing clinical, scientific and public health leadership, expert guidance on a broad portfolio of domestic and global health issues, and advice to the CDC Director on clinical and scientific priorities, while helping lead strategic public health efforts across CDC's centers, institute and offices.
Before joining CDC, Shuford served as commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), where she oversaw statewide public health programs including infectious disease response, health promotion, epidemiology and emergency preparedness. She previously served as Texas' chief state epidemiologist, after practicing as an infectious disease physician in Austin, Texas. She joined DSHS in 2017 and contributed to major public health responses including measles and COVID-19.
Shuford received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, completed an internal medicine residency at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, where she served as chief resident, completed an infectious diseases fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and earned a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases. The Reuters report did not state a reason for her departure, an exact leaving date, or a successor.
