Las Vegas Woman Sentenced to 24 Months in Wyoming Forged Treasury Check Scheme

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Wyoming announced on October 27, 2026, that Katrina Marie Amaya-Lopez, 47, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Scott W. Skavdahl to 24 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for passing a stolen U.S. Treasury check that she falsely endorsed at a Wyoming bank. She was also ordered to pay $150,590 in restitution. The sentence was imposed on October 20, 2026, in Casper, Wyoming.
Investigators tracked Amaya-Lopez across state lines and arrested her in Nevada on May 1, 2026. The case (No. 26-CR-00069) was investigated by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Vierbuchen.
U.S. Attorney Darin D. Smith warned that anyone who brings financial fraud to Wyoming should be prepared for a federal prison stay. Prosecutors said the case is part of the Justice Department's National Fraud Enforcement Division operations supporting Executive Order 14395, issued by President Donald J. Trump on March 16, 2026, establishing the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud.
