Islamic Center of San Diego, California Placed on Lockdown October 27 "Out of an Abundance of Caution," Police Say

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Society · GSM News

San Diego, San Diego County, California: The San Diego Police Department announced at about 3 p.m. on October 27 that the Islamic Center of San Diego, at 7050 Eckstrom Avenue in the Clairemont neighborhood, "is currently on lockdown out of an abundance of caution," with officers on site and the public asked to avoid the area.

Police also asked the public to call 911 if they spot a gray 2015 Toyota 4Runner with New York license plate KGN3027, confirming the vehicle is related to the lockdown, but did not disclose what prompted the measure. The complex houses a full-time private school and youth programs; police said officers were working to clear the remaining students and would hold a press briefing. As of publication, police had reported no injuries connected with the lockdown.

The center is the largest mosque in San Diego County. On May 18, two teenage gunmen, Caleb Vazquez, 19, and Cain Clark, 17, opened fire at the center, killing three people including a security guard before taking their own lives; police said hate inscriptions were found on the weapons and investigated the attack as a hate crime. A 17-year-old North Carolina student, Sarah Lindsey Santiago, was later charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy, with prosecutors alleging she had agreed to livestream the attack.

Police said additional updates would follow; GSM will continue to follow this story.
