A 42-year-old woman was shot and killed outside a residence in the Town of Springwater, Livingston County, New York, on the night of October 25. In a statement issued on October 27, the Livingston County Sheriff's Office said her boyfriend, Christopher Smith, 26, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder, and was remanded without bail after arraignment.

According to the official statement from Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty, deputies were dispatched at about 11:07 p.m. on October 25 to a residence in the Town of Springwater for a report of a person who had been shot. Deputies arrived and found a woman outside the residence who had been shot and was deceased. The deceased was later identified as Shannon Knapp, 42, who resided at the residence.

The investigation revealed that an altercation involving three other individuals had taken place outside the residence, and that during the altercation a 12-gauge shotgun was introduced and ultimately discharged, leading to Knapp being shot, the Sheriff's Office said. Sheriff's Office members worked throughout the night and day piecing together the events that led to the shooting, and investigators located and secured weapons believed to be involved.

On October 26, Sheriff's investigators arrested Smith and charged him with felony murder in the second degree, felony criminal use of a firearm in the first degree, and misdemeanor menacing in the second degree. Smith was turned over to Central Booking deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention, and was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) before Town of Springwater Justice Johnson. He was remanded to the custody of the Sheriff and held with no bail. The charges have not been adjudicated in court.

The Sheriff's Office said members of its Command Staff, Criminal Investigations Division, Patrol Division and Forensic Identification Unit assisted with the investigation, along with the Livingston County District Attorney's Office, and that the investigation continues. At an October 27 press conference, Sheriff Dougherty said the accused and the victim were boyfriend and girlfriend, called the shooting an isolated incident, and said there was no threat to the public.
