Los Angeles Central Library: Free ALOUD Centennial Talk on Oct. 28 with Susan Orlean

Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · Events · GSM News

The Los Angeles Central Library, in the city of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, will host a free ALOUD centennial talk, "Built for the Future—Saved for the Next Century," at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, in the library's Mark Taper Auditorium. Hosted by Madeleine Brand, the conversation features writer Susan Orlean along with Adrian Scott Fine and John Welborne. Admission is free with advance reservation, and the talk will also be livestreamed.

The Central Library building opened in 1926 and marks its centenary in 2026. The panel will look back at the landmark's hundred years, including the 1978 preservation campaign that saved it from demolition, and look ahead to the future of public libraries. The event is presented by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles with the Los Angeles Conservancy. Orlean is the author of The Library Book, the bestseller about the Central Library's 1986 fire and rebuilding.

Under the organizer's free-program reservation policy, reservations are free but do not guarantee admission; attendees are advised to arrive early, and unclaimed seats will be released to a standby line at showtime. The talk will stream live on the Library Foundation of Los Angeles YouTube channel. The Central Library is at 630 W. 5th St, Los Angeles, CA 90071; drivers can park at the Westlawn Garage (524 S. Flower St), where parking is $1 with library-card validation for cars exiting before 9 p.m.
